How to Make Your Bed: Easy Tips and Tricks

How to make your bed in 8 simple steps

Step 1: Hide unsightly bed frames with a bed skirt

Bed skirts aren't a necessity, but can be great for hiding unsightly bed frames or storage boxes. They are designed to conceal the area under your bed and are sometimes also referred to as dust ruffles.

Adding a bed skirt to your bed is easy:

  1. Remove your mattress from the bed frame.
  2. Carefully place the bed skirt around your bed.
  3. Align the stitches of your bed skirt with your bed frame.
  4. Place your mattress over the bed skirt.

Whether or not you choose to add a bed skirt is purely an aesthetic preference, so feel free to skip over this step if your bed doesn't need one!

Step 2: Add an extra layer of comfort with a mattress topper

Sink into a deep and peaceful slumber with a luxury mattress topper, designed to make your sleep experience just a little more special. Mattress toppers add a few extra inches of comfort for a soft and buoyant feel that will keep you cosy throughout the night.

To add a mattress topper to your bed, simply roll the mattress pad out on top of your mattress, ensuring it's aligned with the corners. Choosing a mattress topper with a viscoelastic bottom is best so it doesn't slip around during the night.

Step 3: Keep your bed clean with a mattress protector

All sorts of things can seep through your sheets and onto your mattress, but a mattress protector will keep it looking brand new for years to come. That's why we think mattress protectors play an essential role in knowing how to make your bed the right way.

There are countless benefits to having a comfortable mattress protector:

  • Protects your mattress from spills
  • Prevents blood stains
  • Stops sweat from seeping into your mattress
  • Protects against general wear and tear
  • Stops allergens like dust and mites from entering your mattress

Mattress protectors can easily be thrown in the washing machine to keep them fresh and clean, making them very worthwhile investments. To add a mattress protector to your bed, simply pull the corners of the mattress protector over the corners of your mattress as you would a fitted sheet.

Step 4: Add a comfortable fitted sheet

Fitted sheets cover your mattress to form the base layer of your bedding. Most people opt for fitted sheets rather than flat sheets to form the bottom layer because they have elasticated corners that make changing your bedding quick and easy.

Make sure you select the correct sheet size for your bed to ensure the sheet fits snuggly around the corners as it should.

To put your fitted sheet on your bed, lay it on top of your mattress in the same lengthwise orientation and pull each corner over the corners of your mattress. It can be helpful to start with the most difficult corner to reach and leave the easiest corner until last.

Step 5: Layer up with a flat sheet

Flat sheets act as a protective barrier between you and your comforter or duvet. Although not essential, these sheets can help to prevent any sweat or dirt from transferring to your top layer.

Whether you prefer quality percale bed sheets or luxuriously soft sateen bed sheets, choosing the right material is essential for a good night's sleep.

To lay a flat sheet, centre it on your bed in the same orientation as your bedding. Fold the bottom of the sheet underneath your mattress and do hospital corners to ensure it stays in place.

How to make your bed using hospital corners:

Nailing this type of flat sheet fold will ensure your bedding looks crisp and neat, and it's easy once you know how.

  1. Fold the end of the sheet under the end of your mattress, leaving the sides still hanging loose.
  2. Grab a piece of the sheet one to two feet away from the end of the bed and lift it up at a 45-degree angle from the corner of the mattress.
  3. Lay the piece down on top of your mattress so it makes a triangular shape at the foot of your bed. Hold this piece in place and neatly tuck the excess sheet under your mattress.
  4. Let the triangle-shaped section down and tuck any edges that hang over the edge of your bed underneath the mattress.

Step 6: Add a luxurious duvet

Although the top layer of your bed could actually consist of a comforter, quilt, or duvet, cosy duvets are the most popular choice because they're easier to take care of.

A duvet cover can easily be removed to put in the washing machine, while comforters and quilts would have to be professionally cleaned.

To put a duvet on your bed the right way:

  1. Start by laying the duvet on top of your bed in the same orientation as your bedding. Make sure there's an equal amount of duvet material hanging over each side of the bed for a neat and tidy finish.
  2. If you prefer tighter sheets, you can fold the edges of your duvet under your mattress. It's perfectly fine to leave it as is if you prefer your sheets to be looser.
  3. To finish, take the top sheet and duvet together in your hands. Neatly and smoothly fold them down so that the inside pattern of your sheets is visible.

Step 7: Beautify your bed with the perfect pillow arrangement

Once all of your sheets are in place, it's time to add the pillows. The size and type of pillows you use can make a big difference when determining how to make your bed.

Some people prefer to keep it simple and functional with two standard pillows, while others enjoy more quirky pillow arrangements to reflect their style and personality

One simple yet effective way to arrange pillows on a bed is by starting with 4 standard pillows (or 2 if you have a double bed) and adding an accent pillow in front as the perfect finishing touch. This accent pillow might match other aspects of your bedding or room decor to add dimension to your bed.

When making your bed in the mornings:

  1. Be sure to fluff your sleeping pillows up by grabbing both sides and squeezing them together.
  2. Lay the pillows at the head of your bed in the space between your folded duvet and headboard. Arrange the pillows however you please - you can use our guide on how to arrange pillows on a bed for inspiration.
  3. To keep your pillows comfortable and create a lived-in look, karate-chop your pillows down the middle once they're in place.
  4. Add any decorative pillows or cushions in front of your sleeping pillows. These luxurious Jaipur cushions are perfect for adding a subtle pop of colour to your bedding arrangement.

Step 8: Finish with a stylish and cosy throw blanket

Throw blankets are not only great for keeping you extra warm and cosy at night, but also for creating a stylish finish that ties in with the rest of your room decor.

There are plenty of luxurious throw blankets out there, so the style you choose depends completely on your personal preferences. These cosy knitted throws are perfect for snuggling up with and can easily be matched to the rest of your bedding, while the Jaipur throw has a beautiful velvety texture that is sure to add a touch of luxury to your bedroom.

When making your bed, neatly fold your throw blanket in half and style it across the foot of your bed. Place it horizontally for a classic look, or drape it diagonally over one of the corners of your bed for a more quirky look.

Healthy bed-making habits for a happier mind and body

When it comes to getting a great night's sleep, knowing how to make your bed is only half of it. These healthy bed-making habits will ensure you wake up feeling truly refreshed and ready to take on the world.

Wash your bedding regularly

According to the experts, you need to wash your bedding at least once every two weeks to keep it clean and hygienic. Unwashed sheets can cause health issues over time, such as irritated skin, acne, and allergic reactions to dust mites.

If you're prone to sweating in your sleep, it's recommended that you wash your bedding even more frequently - once a week is advisable.

Fix your bed every single morning

It may sound like a chore, but believe us - it's worth it.

Research suggests that people who make their bed every morning are happier and more successful than those who don't.

Why? Well, making the bed gives us a feeling of accomplishment first thing in the morning. When we feel good about ourselves right from the get-go, the momentum is likely to last all day and encourage us to take on those complex tasks that we might otherwise shy away from.
